You know that blissful feeling you get when you look at a completed space? That’s how I feel at this exact moment, as I stare at my newly styled and organized home office bookcase. You see, I have been undergoing a slow and steady home office makeover. It all started three months ago when I decided I wanted to create a more inspiring space in my home office. Jason jumped on board and helped me tackle an accent wall that sits behind my desk. What was once a standard white wall is now a sterling grey wall that boasts 16 board and batten squares. It gives my cozy 8×10 room a much more polished look.

Our next project was to up cycle my bland bookcase into one that looked more like this holland bookcase. After filling a few holes, adding legs and crown molding, and painting it, my bookcase transformed into what it looks like below. It sat in my office empty for over a month. Sad, I know. But it got pushed to the back burner because I have a toddler who’s starting to walk…need I say more?

I am happy to report that I did find some time (thanks, Grandma!) to finally finish styling it. To get some ideas for bookcase decor, I referenced my home office design board that I made awhile back.

I’m very pleased with the end result of my office bookcase!

HERE ARE 4 TIPS TO STYLE AN OFFICE BOOKCASE:

Determine a color scheme.

Determining a color scheme will help you achieve a cohesive look that looks uncluttered. As I mentioned above, I chose to utilize my home office design board for inspiration. You’ll notice from my design board below that I am drawn to wood tones, greenery, and grey and white tones. These are the colors I chose to incorporate in my styled office bookcase.

Incorporate the B’s: baskets, bins, binders, and books.

It’s important to design with function in mind, especially when it comes to an office space. Using pretty decor that doubles as storage is a win-win. I snagged the two wood boxes with lids at Michaels while the weaved basket was a find from Home Goods. That sweet little white mailbox used to be blue and was my mom’s at one point. Hmm, not sure how it got to my house. 😉

When you use books, you can always invert them so the pages show instead of the binding. This will eliminate random binding colors showing. Another great option to achieve uniformity is to wrap your books in some type of paper.

Add a variety of decor with height variations.

I chose to accent my functional decor with stylish decor that I mostly found around my home. I am a firm believe that you don’t have to spend a fortune to achieve a beautiful look. I found this large glass jar while once again rummaging through my mom’s house. It’s not like she was using it. 🙂

The wine bottles below were an easy DIY project I had done awhile back. I just painted them white and added burlap. Simple!A Brick Home: how to style an office bookcase, office bookcase decor, office decor ideas, bookshelf decorating

On the bottom shelf, I continued the wine theme by adding an oversized glass filled with used wine corks.A Brick Home: how to style an office bookcase, office bookcase decor, office decor ideas, bookshelf decorating

Another easy DIY project I incorporated is the photo below. I just typed and printed out a saying I liked, then added it to a frame. I love when projects are budget friendly!

Adorn your shelves with plants.

I personally prefer using real plants, but I do sometimes opt for faux ones. I have a mixtures of real and faux plants below.
