HOW TO DECORATE A BUFFET TABLE:

ADD LARGE ITEM(S) AS THE BACKDROP

The first idea to decorate your buffet table is to add a large decorative item as the backdrop to your buffet table.

You could add a large mirror, two medium-sized mirrors, or a large picture or wall art piece. By doing so, the buffet table will look balanced.

USE TALL DECOR ON EITHER END

I’ve decorated my buffet table so many ways (see below), but I always tend to love it best when I add taller items to both ends of the buffet table.

The items don’t have to be matching items, but I do think it looks balanced if the heights of the items are fairly similar.

There are plenty of looks below where I only place a tall item on one end, and that definitely works – I think it’s really just personal preference.

Some ideas for tall decor items include: planter with a plant, vase with tall greenery or flowers, candlesticks, lamps, or a tiered tray full of decorative items.

ADD A COUPLE OTHER DECORATIVE ITEMS TO THE MIDDLE

When decorating the middle of your buffet top, I suggest using some shorter items but not overloading it with small trinkets.

Above I used functional items, including chargers and napkins that could be placed on the table.

Other decorative items you could use to decorate your buffet table include candlesticks, candles, a cloche, a tray with items, antlers, bead garland, a small sign, or a vessel full of an item (like wine corks).

The options for decor are really limitless, but I’d say to try and keep it to just a few items in the middle.

I also love the idea of being repetitive. A lot of one item can be a good thing, especially when it comes to decorating.

Below I’ve included past looks of my buffet table decorated for different seasons. You’ll notice I usually choose a mirror for the backdrop!

In this look, I layered a couple mirrors to give it some dimension.

Here is my spring look from last year. A great way to dress up your mirror is to add some garland. I used two strands of eucalyptus garland and added in some faux white flowers.

This was one of my winter-themed looks. I used lots of small decor pieces in this look, which nowadays I probably wouldn’t do.

Here is one of my Christmas buffet table looks. Another great option to dress up a mirror is to add a wreath. I especially love adding wreaths around my home during the winter season.

Here is a fall-to-winter look I did with pumpkins, evergreens and copper. I added texture to this vignette with several birch candles.

Below is a pretty simple spring look. you’ll notice a lot of repetition in decor items I’ve used in the past. You don’t always have to reinvent the wheel. Sometimes switching the placement of a couple items does the trick!

This fall farmhouse look was one of my favorites. It’s so simple with a pretty wreath and some greenery.

It doesn’t get much simpler than this look. A couple candles and a big pitcher vase of eucalyptus stems. I stocked up on these great-priced stems and they’ve proven to be a staple in my home.

Here’s another incredibly simple look. If you have fresh flowers, display them! Nothing is better than looking at beautiful, fresh flowers on your buffet table.

Here’s another instance where I used fresh flowers. I also had this antique mirror above the mantel for awhile. Eventually I decided to use a bit of a bigger one. But, I did love this sweet, romantic look.

Here’s a unique and different way to display garland. I wouldn’t display it this way today, but I am glad I switched it up and gave new things a try!

I used lamps in this buffet styling, and it’s quite a romantic look. I love the idea of using the buffet for functional items that you’ll actually use when sitting at the dining table (i.e. wine glasses). Nothing beats the combination of practical and pretty decor!

There you have it! I hope you got some inspiration for your own buffet table decorating. I loved taking a trip down memory lane and seeing how my style has evolved over the years.
