How to Style a Bed Beautifully

Learn how to style a bed and make your bedroom a beautiful oasis!

I am a firm believer in investing in good bedding. We spend so much of our lives in our beds that it makes sense to be comfortable! Plus, great bedding will help you get a better night’s sleep so it’s really a win-win!

We recently invested in Target’s new line of bedding: Casaluna. It’s not overly expensive, but when you purchase a lot of it at once, it can quickly add up. That being said, we’ve had it now for several weeks, and it’s turning out to be such a great investment.

More on that below.

Let’s first chat about some key things I’ve come to realize over the years about a well-styled bed.

HERE ARE A FEW MAIN TIPS TO MAKE A BEAUTIFULLY STYLED BED:

  1. White bedding always looks good.
  2. Choosing linens with various textures on your bed will make it feel cozy.
  3. Laying the pillows you sleep on down flat when you make your bed will help your euro and throw pillows stand up straight against them. This makes your bed look well-styled.
  4. Buy the euro pillows (or really large throw pillows)!!! They make ALL the difference.
  5. Buying at least two types of top-layer bedding (the layers over your sheets) helps your bed look stylish and cozy. That could be a duvet + a quilt, a duvet + a cozy blanket, a comforter + a quilt, or a comforter + a cozy blanket. Adding three layers, such as a duvet + a quilt + a cozy blanket, makes it even better!

Creating a beautifully styled bed always start with having a nice backdrop for your linens, i.e. the bed itself. Purchasing a nice bed or a nice headboard doesn’t have to cost a fortune. There are plenty of options to DIY a headboard or you can wait until a bed you’re eyeing goes on sale!

We have this bed along with the matching nightstands and dresser. We love it because it gives us both wood and fabric on the headboard. Jason wanted an all-wood bed and I wanted an all-fabric bed so we compromised and both got what we wanted! 🙂

Investing a good mattress is next. If that’s not doable, consider a mattress topper. We have a 3 inch mattress topper for over top our mattress, and it is so incredibly comfortable. It actually feels just like a great mattress – except way less money. Our topper is so good that I actually have a hard time sleeping on other beds, including ones in hotels!

SHEETS

I personally love white sheets. I used to never purchase white sheets for fear that they would get dirty easily. But, now that I’ve had white sheets for awhile, that’s never been a problem.

We don’t allow our dogs on the bed anymore so that has really helped keep our white sheets nice and clean. Plus, I can’t stand dog hair on my bed so that’s been a great benefit of moving them to their doggy beds at night.

I also have other neutral shades of sheets including gray and beige, but I always seem to prefer my white sheets!

We have these 500 thread count white sheets, and they’re super cozy.

COMFORTER OR DUVET/DUVET INSERT

I like to layer my comforter directly over my sheets. I actually used to use a duvet and a duvet insert, which I still very much love. However, once I saw the new Casaluna bedding set at Target, I knew I wanted pretty much all of it including the white comforter!

I particularly love this comforter because of the texture on it! It has this beautiful stitched texture on the outward side, which gives it that cozy vibe. And it’s not scratchy at all! The other side of the comforter – the one that touches the sheet – is really soft.

If you have a duvet, I suggest checking out the duvet option that Casaluna bedding provides! It is very similar to the comforter that I have.

QUILT

Depending on your preference, you can add a quilt or not. If you want to add a quilt, I suggest either placing it between the sheet and comforter/ duvet or placing it at bottom of your bed, folded like a throw blanket.

I like using quilt in the summer because they offer a less heavy option and keep you cooler than a comforter.

BED BLANKET

I’ve never been a huge proponent for needing a blanket…UNTIL I SAW THIS CHUNKY KNIT ONE! This is, hands down, my favorite piece of the Casaluna bedding set.

I used to use a throw blanket at the end of my bed, but I realized that I actually prefer a much larger blanket at the end so that if we get cold at night, we have an ample-sized blanket to pull up and cover us.

I bought the chunky knit blanket in king size in the color natural. I love how contrasts with the white comforter and yet still ties in with the color of my bed.

The best part about this cozy blanket is that it DOESN’T SHED. You read that right. It’s hard to find a cozy knit blanket that doesn’t shed, and this one is it! Also, after I washed it, it became even more comfy. This blanket is definetely the cozy bed winner!

You could place a bed blanket between your sheet and comforter, but if you have one that is this gorgeous knit pattern, why hide it? Let that blanket be the star of your bed! That’s why I keep mine at the end of my bed – it’s there for me to look at and then jump in and easily cuddle under for a nap.

PILLOWS

The pillows are what takes your bedding to another level! On our bed, we have four sleeping pillows, two of which are ones we actually sleep on. It’s important to lay those completely down (as opposed to propping them up against the headboard) when styling your bed.

Next, and most importantly, are the euro pillows, or large throw pillows. I suggest three euro or large pillows for a king size bed. The euro/large pillows are, in my opinion, the key to making a bed look professionally styled.

Following that comes the remaining throw pillows. I like to add two smaller square throw pillows and a lumbar pillow.

TRAY ADDITION

This definitely isn’t necessary, but if you are having guests over, a tray addition is always a nice touch to compliment your styled bed.

On my tray, I added a flower arrangement, a candle, two copper wine glasses, and a pitcher.

STEPS ON HOW TO STYLE A BED (KING SIZE)

There are definitely variations to styling a bed beautifully, but this is typically how I make my bed!

  1. Begin with bare mattress/mattress topper
  2. Add a mattress protector on top
  3. Add a fitted sheet
  4. Add a flat sheet and tuck it in all the way around
  5. Add your comforter or duvet/duvet cover directly on top the flat sheet
  6. Fold down your comforter or duvet/duvet cover twice
  7. Fold a bed blanket or quilt and lay it on the end of your bed
  8. Lay four sleeping pillows flat on your bed – two on each side.
  9. Add three euro shams/pillows (add two if you have a queen bed)
  10. Add two throw pillows
  11. Add a lumbar pillow

Remember, you can swap out items or put them in different positions on the bed and it will still look great! For example, you could add a quilt between the sheet and comforter. Or, you could use a quilt at the end of the bed instead of a bed blanket.

The general idea is that you add multiple layers of bedding that have different textures.

Then…this is an important step…you lay the pillows you sleep on down flat so that your euro and throw pillows stand up straight.

Don’t skip out on the euro pillows. These are what really make your bed look professionally styled!

*Tip* If you have smaller sleeping pillows and a lot of extra pillow case material hanging over, tuck the material in on one side of your pillow.
