Can you believe it’s December? It’s crazy to think that in just a few weeks 2018 will be over and all of these fun holiday times will be sweet memories that are hopefully filled with joyous family moments. I don’t know about you but I want to make our 2018 holiday season the best one yet! I may or may not say that every year. 😉
Many of our memories are made in our family room. It’s where we spend the majority of our time as a family. Being that I also work from home on this blog of mine, many days are spent on the couch watching Hannah play while I write blog posts. I certainly use my home office as well, but during the holiday season, I do tend to spend a bit more time working in our family room because it’s where our big Christmas tree and cozy fireplace are.
Similar to the rest of the main floor of the house, I decided to keep the family room neutral for the holiday season. If you follow along on Instagram you may have seen a sneak peek at our Christmas bedroom, in which case, you know that I did add some traditional red tones there. That’s the only place in our home that has red tones though.
I really wanted to continue with the casual elegance and snowy neutral look in my family room.
So, come on in, take a look around, and enjoy the tour!

HERE’S OUR NEUTRAL CHRISTMAS MANTEL & COZY FAMILY ROOM

On Instagram I mentioned that I redid my Christmas mantel a few times. I even have a photo of how my mantel originally looked with the garland flowing on just one side. After I created that look on my mantel, I realized that, although I liked it, I was craving symmetry this year. I went back to the drawing board and created a symmetrical and neutral Christmas mantel.

I arranged my greenery picks from Michael’s into lookalike garland. That’s right, this isn’t actually garland. To create the side pieces, I simply tied together three picks of greenery so it created one long piece of “garland.” I did that on both sides to create a cascading look.

If you look closely at the middle of the garland, there is no garland! I didn’t have enough pieces to span between the two cascading sides, so instead I stuck my DIY snow-covered pinecones in the middle. They help create an illusion that the garland continues the entire way across.

As I usually do, I kept my antique mirror as the centerpiece to my mantel. I added my favorite silver candle holders in front of the mirror, which helps create a very elegant look.

On the hearth, I kept my trusty wooden candle holders that I always use there and added a sweet bow around each, just to give it a little something extra. Ya’ll know how I like to mix casual and elegant together. I think my candle holders and bows are the perfect combination to do just that. This gorgeous neutral Christmas mantel accompanies a cozy and neutral family room with a snow-filled Christmas tree! The birch candles on my coffee table are another favorite of mine. I bought them last year and love using them for my fall and winter looks.

This room’s corner is definitely the coziest corner of my home. I have the perfect view of all things Christmasy.

As you may imagine, this is the spot I spent a lot of time. When we bought our couch, I knew I’d want to cozy up on the chaise.

From this spot, I get to admire both the twinkly lights on my mantel and the twinkly lights on my Christmas tree all at the same time.

I prefer using the larger cone-shaped Christmas lights in my home, as you can see on my garland. I also prefer the lights to be the soft white hue as opposed to the bright white hue. I think the soft white hue just give a more elegant vibe.

Next to the actual fireplace, on the right side of the hearth, I decided to add some firewood for our fires. Usually we keep our firewood outside because it’s kind of messy, but I decided to bring it indoors this year. I love that it acts as decor while also being practical and functional.

It has been nice not having to go outside to get it every time we want to make a fire. The downside is I have to sweep pretty consistently. I have a toddler, though, so I’m sweeping all the time regardless! 😉

Here’s a peek of the room from our kitchen. I love these pendant lights over our bar top, but soon they’ll be gone as we transition this space to a built-in breakfast nook! There’s more to come on that project, and I can’t wait to share our plans with you over the next couple months.
