WEEK 1 (DIY wallpaper) | WEEK 2 (dresser makeover)ย | WEEK 3 (DIY wall banner) | WEEK 4 (reading nook) | WEEK 5 (you are here!)

It’s reveal day, ya’ll! I’ve been busting my buns over here the past month to turn my daughter’s bedroom into a dream-like, vintage & shabby chic toddler girl’s bedroom. I think it’s safe to say she LOVES it. If you’re just joining in, welcome! I’m participating in the $100 room challenge, created by Erin from Lemons, Lavender, & Laundry.ย The $100 room challenge is a challenge to makeover a room in just one month for only $100.

This was my first time participating in the $100 room challenge, and here’s what I learned from this challenge:

  1. It’s hard to redo a room in a month, but it’s WAY HARDER to stay within budget.
  2. This challenge pushed me to completely finish a room in one month, and I’m so thankful for that. Normally I do bits and pieces of a room and it takes forever to finish, but my daughter’s room is completely done because of this challenge! High five!
  3. I got way more creative & crafty than I ever have when redoing this room, and it’s cool to think that I was able to come up with thrifty ideas with a large impact. I think sometimes we don’t use our imagination as much as we could, but this challenge brought out ALL the creativeness in me.
  4. I love that we posted once a week toward specific goals. It helped keep me on my toes with this project.
  5. I would/will absolutely do the $100 room challenge again!

Now that we got that out of the way, let’s take a look at how far my daughter’s room has come over the course of just one month and just $100.

Week one was all about taking down wallpaper, repainting her room, and creating an easy DIY wallpaper accent wall.

Here’s a before and after:

I used a fun vintage symbol foam stamp to make the accent wall.

Week two was all about updating her vintage vanity dresser that was mine when I was little.ย  And then during week three, I made an easy, budget-friendly scalloped wall banner for above her refinished dresser.

Here’s a before and after:

I kept the dresser makeover fairly simplistic, as I wanted to keep its rustic and vintage appeal.

The DIY wall banner really helps accentuate the dresser! I love that I had enough banner to create a scalloped look above it.

This past week I added some additional decor to this space, including two pictures, a basket and some spare pillows and blankets. I also hung her sweet heart-shaped art piece that was in her nursery, to her door.

It makes for the perfect toddler girl’s bedroom dresser, and it’s so amazing watching her use something I used when I was growing up. Oh, my heart.

Week four was dedicated to creating a reading nook for my little girl. I transformed a blank corner of her room into an educational sitting & reading corner. I didn’t quite finish up the space in week four, so I continued on it this past week.

Here’s a before & after:

I finished up her reading nook by adding a simple, DIY alphabet wall using items I already owned. All I used for this project was note cards, stencils, paint, string, and clothespins, which were all in my craft closet.

Then, I moved her map cork board from over her bed (where I put it during week three) to over her bench. I felt like it was a better spot for it and the final touch needed for this easy & fun little corner.DREAM toddler girl's bedroom with a shabby chic and vintage vibe! #girlsbedroom

But wait! There’s more. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I also moved a door organizer from inside our hall closet (which we weren’t using), and put it inside her clothes closet for book storage. It works perfectly because I can open the door and have her books right beside her reading nook. And, when she’s not using her nook, I can shut the door and hide all the books.

Here’s how it looks with the door open:

And here’s how it looks with the door closed:

She’s already obsessed with her reading nook!

Week five (this past week) was all about putting the finishing touches on the room and updating the light fixture. We opted not to replace the ceiling fan because lack of budget and also because it works just fine & she loves having a fan in her room. So that just meant I needed to update it cosmetically. I simply swapped out the light globe and painted the birds on the pull string rose gold to match her room. Luckily, it didn’t take much work to make it fit the feel of the room.

Here’s a look at the before & after:

She loves her fan humming at night, so it worked out well to just update the existing ceiling fan.

I also added some window treatments using things I already owned.

Here’s a before & after:

Earlier in the month I added blinds to both windows which ate up a lot of the budget, but were completely necessary. (It’s hard to see them in these photos, but they’re hiding behind the curtains.) She naps in her room during the day so I needed a way to keep light out. I really wanted to add some type of window treatments on top the blinds, but I had to keep it budget-friendly which left me to use things I already owned.

I had two beige curtains from my old office that were sitting in storage. I normally add two curtains to each window but since I only had two curtains total, I had to find a way to use one curtain per window. Luckily, I had two curtains rods hanging in our spare room that weren’t being used. I moved them over to these windows for the curtains. I actually topped each curtain with some pink tulle I had leftover from my daughter’s 2nd birthday party. It’s hard to tell in the photos, but it’s there! I also tied each curtain in the center with a piece of tulle. I can easily do a side wrap too; I just thought the center-wrap looked kind’ve fun for a toddler girl’s bedroom. My husband said it looked like a castle when he walked in her room and saw the curtains hung! Haha!

You’ve probably noticed in the before & after photos, but we also moved her bed to the corner of the room.

Side note: we bought this bed awhile back on Marketplace for just $30. Such a steal! We originally had it in the center of the room, but decided to move it for two reasons. 1. She can only fall off one side of the bed (which she never has but it is still nice for safety purposes!) and 2. That leaves more room in the center of the room for her to play.

My little girl already LOVES her room. She helped me work on each project throughout the whole month, which I think makes it even more special for her.

I’m so happy she loves her shabby chic toddler girl’s bedroom as much as I do. I know she’ll enjoy it for years to come!

Hereโ€™s a recap of my goals for the $100 room challenge:
1. Create an Accent Wall with DIY Wallpaperย
2. Makeover the antique vanity cabinet in her room
3. Update the light fixture
4. Create some DIY wall art
5. Do something fun with the other corner in her room
6. Get some type of window treatment
Hereโ€™s a look at what I used this week and the budget:
  • Light fixture cover ($4.19 – found at Lowe’s in the clearance isle)
  • Materials to create alphabet wall (paint, note cards, stencils, clothesline clips – already owned)
  • Picture frames & pictures (already owned)
  • Decorative bin, pillow & blanket (already owned)
Total spent on week 5: $4.19
Total spent on week 4: $18.00
Total spent on week 3: $49.48
Total spent on week 2: $1.25
Total spent on week 1: $26.71
Total: $99.63
Budget: $100
Remaining balance: $0.37
Whew! I cut it VERY close but was able to just stay under budget. ๐Ÿ™‚

Beautiful job Marly. Your daughter’s room has a wonderful glow about it with all the warm rose gold color and it’s something she can keep as she grows older. Having two girls myself I doubt they she won’t want to change it some because that’s what girls do. Maybe it will be something really fun that you can do together.

  11. This is the sweetest little bedroom. I LOVE how you created the vintage vibe with a little girl in mind. It seems not that long ago we were talking about this challenge on your podcast, and now you have your own room to add to the challenge reveals! I totally agree with all your lessons learned: having a month is tough, but it keeps you on track and you actually get the room DONE. AND you think so much more creatively when you have a limited budget. And sometimes, I think the solutions we come up with when under the pressure of a tight budget turn out better than they would have had we bought everything new. Hope your little girl enjoys her room for years to come. You did an amazing job and I am SO glad you joined us!
