Sophisticated Baby Boy Nursery Reveal with Less-Toxic Items

We are so excited to welcome our baby boy to our family in just a couple months! I designed his nursery awhile back via a mood board (see below) and finally finished getting it all put together a couple days ago. We actually had quite a bit of work to do to get this nursery ready because I had to move around two other bedrooms in my home to make this room available for baby boy.

Drapes | Art prints | Crib | Mirror | Dresser | Rug | Light | Glider

I am so happy with how it all came together! The only two things I changed from the original mood board is the dresser and light. I just decided to keep the ones we already had.

Luckily, this room was already a nursery so we just had to convert it from a girl’s nursery to a boy’s nursery. Here’s how our daughter’s nursery looked in this same space. We moved our now-toddler into a different room that’s down the hall. I really wanted this specific room to remain a nursery because it’s closest to my bedroom and it’s also the smallest bedroom.

When we moved our daughter into her toddler room, we took her crib out of this room and moved it with her, down the hall to her new room. This meant we had to get a new crib for the new nursery. I did tons of research and landed on this black, 3-in-1 convertible crib. I have been trying to reduce the toxins in our home and I love that this crib is GREENGUARD Gold Certified, which means it is built to contribute to safer, cleaner quality air.

For the mattress, I chose the Avocado organic crib mattress. This mattress is amazing for so many reasons. Not only is it comfortable, it’s also the safest mattress I have found! According to the Avocado website, their mattress “…is Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verified and GREENGUARD Gold certified for low emissions from UL. It’s also a GOTS-certified organic product, which means the entire supply chain of each material within the mattress has met the strictest standard for ecological and social responsibility.” I actually purchased a second crib mattress too and replaced my toddler’s mattress with this one. My goal this year is to replace ALL of our mattresses with Avocado mattresses!

I also purchased their organic crib mattress protector. For the crib sheets, I found these 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, dye-free natural sheets on Amazon for a great price.

The big detail that really pulls this nursery design together are the cute deer and forest prints! I was able to reuse the frames, which I bought from Home Goods years ago, and just print out 9×12 prints. I always get asked where I get my larger digital prints printed. I typically just google it and see what type of deals are going on. There’s all type of print-ordering options from places including Shutterfly, VistaPrint, CVS, Walmart, Amazon, Walgreens, and so many more. This time around, CVS was running a 70% discount so I was able to get them printed for around $6/each! It was an amazing deal.

On the other side of the room we have the glider and storage ottoman which I decided to reuse from when it was my daughter’s nursery. I love this chair so much; it is so comfortable and perfect for rocking a baby. The storage ottoman is also great because I can house all the baby toys and books when not in use.

I ended up moving these drapes from our living room into the nursery. They’re actually blackout curtains which I always opt for in a nursery. These are the color Denver taupe and they pull a muted brownish tone. I think they work perfectly in here with the new rug!

The area rug is made using CloudPile, which is the softest feeling ever. We have a different CloudPile rug in our bedroom which I’m obsessed with, so naturally when I found this one for baby boy’s room, I immediately bought it! We have the 5×7 rug in navy/sand, and I think the colors are so good.

I didn’t change too much else from the original reading nook from our daughter’s nursery. I decided to keep the sconce light and black side table (similar option). I did switch out the art print for one I found in my collection.

I also added a real rubber plant on the side table. I found a bunch at my local Home Depot for $20/each. Rubber plants have an array of benefits and I’ve slowly been adding one to each bedroom in our home. Rubber plants are known to remove toxins from the air, including formaldehyde and benzene, helping them improve indoor air quality. They can even improve humidity levels. Plus, they’re beautiful to look at, so it’s a win-win!

On the other side of the room, I have the dresser and mirror. I ended up keeping the dresser in here from our daughter’s nursery but switched out the mirror for this round mirror. The dresser was actually made by my dad when I was a baby, so I can’t link it for you. But, here is a similar dresser option.

On the dresser, I have a diaper changing pad paired with a white changing pad cover. I also have this black diaper caddy which I love so much! Once all my kids outgrow diapers, I plan to use it in my car as a tote for kid stuff.

Overall, I didn’t have to spend too much to get this nursery ready for baby boy since I already had some of the major items, like the dresser and the glider. The bigger expenses were the crib and crib mattress.

NURSERY ITEMS & COST BREAKDOWN:
(The below links are affiliate links. For more information, see my disclosure.)

Cost for me (NEW items): $1,204
Total cost (including NEW items and ones I had): $3,586

We also ended up getting new carpet in all the kids room so it was a bit more than that. But, overall, the cost wasn’t too bad considering that most of the items I bought were high-quality and non-toxic.

We are so excited for baby boy to arrive, and now I can relax a bit knowing his nursery is all ready for him!
