Window box flowers that love sun

These pretty window box flowers are such a beautiful addition to my back deck. All the purple, green and white hues add that perfect pop of color that I’ve been craving since I bought my new outdoor furniture.

UPDATE! Look at how these beauties look just a couple weeks later:

I actually used these window boxes on my deck railing instead of under my windows, so don’t feel like you have to use things for their intended purpose all the time!

That being said, I do think that these would look just as lovely under some windows!

The combination of flowers I used in this window box are all flowers that love sun. It’s important that when you go shopping for flowers, you choose ones that will work for your sunny (or shady) spot. So, take a look to see how much sun you get in the area that you want to put your flowers before you go shopping.

The combination of flowers I used are (from left to right):

  • Silver falls Dichondra (likes sun or part sun)
  • Salvia (likes full sun)
  • Cerveza ‘n lime (likes full to part sun)
  • Serena Blue Angelonia (likes full sun. Attracts butterflies)
  • Supertunia white (likes full to part sun)
  • Pink stripes Setcreasea (likes full to part sun)
  • Silver falls Dichondra (likes sun or part sun)
  • Boston fern (likes part sun)
  • Blue ridge mix – saguna light blue, Lanai twister purple, techno heat upright purple (likes full sun)

When I was choosing flowers, I tried to pick a couple different spillers, as well as a thriller and some fillers. It’s a great rule of thumb when you’re planting containers – get a thriller, spiller, and filler.

For this combination, the spillers are the silver falls dichondra and the blue ridge mix. The thriller is the pink stripes setcreasea, and the rest are the fillers.

I actually planted two planter boxes, so I repeated the exact same placement of the flowers in each box.

Here are close ups of each flower that’s part of my window box flowers!

Before you buy window box flowers, I suggest getting an idea of how many flowers you need before you go shopping. I used 10 flowers per box for these window boxes, which totaled around $40/box.

Once I brought my flowers home, instead of planting them right away, I set them in my boxes and swapped them around until I got them just right.

I’m thrilled with how they turned out, and I can’t wait to see them in a few more weeks when all the flowers take off!
